Motivation is the driving force behind what compels someone to want to achieve a particular goal or to experience a particular outcome. While there’s a reason behind every single thing we choose to do (or not do) throughout every day (cleaning the house because company is coming over, setting the alarm to get up in time to be somewhere, putting gas in our vehicle so we don’t get stranded on the road), some outcomes we want to experience are truly life-changing. What makes those big goals still achievable – despite how far out of reach they may seem at first – is that our motivation behind them is also big.

When the motivation is so profound, we remain ever-vigilant and steadfastly committed to achieving the desired outcome. While earning a college degree is one of those big, life-enhancing accomplishments, the motivations behind that accomplishment are unique for each individual person pursuing a degree.

Here’s what has motivated some Averett University students to pursue their college degree:

“My motivation is my children. I want to show them that anything is possible if they set their minds to it.”
– Ashley Denton, Bachelor of Business Administration Student, Class of 2017

“Besides making myself more marketable in the job market, my biggest motivation for obtaining my degree is my 3 children. Neither of my parents, nor my grandparents or great-grandparents,  received a college degree. None of my aunts or uncles have college degrees. I felt a strong need to break this cycle for myself and for my children. I needed to set the example that education is important; and, that it is never too late to strive for greatness. A very good friend of mine was attending Averett and referred me. I was nervous about signing up at first. Once I met with the Averett Advisor, however, there was no turning back for me.”
–
Serina Gaines, Master of Business Administration Student, Class of 2017

“I want to lead by example for my children and set the standard for my household. I want to earn my degree so I can maximize my potential in society. I’ve worked in the community mentoring and coaching for over 25 years. I’ve had the opportunity to help thousands of youth. Once I’ve earned my degree, I can do more for my family and my community. It’s a WIN/WIN for me!”
– Robert Scott, Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Criminal Justice Student, Class of 2018

“For many years, I pondered the idea of finishing my degree but life always seemed to get in the way. I would research colleges; however, the idea would quickly fade away. Months later, the idea would resurface again. Finally, a business venture with my husband made my motivation shift into high gear. We became business owners and while that sounds great, I was nervous. My degrees and education have always been healthcare related, so the thought of owning and operating a business outside my industry was terrifying. That’s when I knew I had to do it. I needed to do it for my husband, our business, and most importantly, for myself. So, I did. I applied to Averett’s GPS BBA Program.

Amanda Santore, Bachelor of Business Administration Student, Class of 2017

“My motivation for obtaining my degree is for my two children to see that hard work does pay off and to never quit trying to improve yourself and your goals.”
–
Michael Andrews, Bachelor of Business Administration Student, Class of 2018

“Receiving my Bachelor’s degree was a long-time goal for me. I thought when I graduated from Averett University with my BSBA I was done with college; however, I realize the importance of continuing my education. As new generations and updated technology enter the workplace, I cannot be complacent with what I know today. Change is going to happen, it is up to me to learn how to integrate these changes into my organization.”
–
Susan Friesz, Master of Business Administration Student, Class of 2019

“Obtaining my MBA degree is a challenge I have accepted for personal growth, with the hope to contribute positively to the community where I reside. I have a passion to educate others and an eagerness for knowledge. The courses in the program have introduced me to priceless administrative skills that are relevant in the world of business.”
–
Jessika Holder, Master of Business Administration Student, Class of 2019

“My motivation for obtaining my Master’s degree in Special Education is that once I am finished I will be able to teach Special Education in the state of Virginia. I am already a Special Education Assistant and going to work every day and interacting with the students constantly reassures me that the path I am on is the right one for me.”
–
Jessica Cooke, M.Ed. in Special Education Student, Class of 2017
