Online Classes FAQs

Here are some commonly asked questions and answers about taking online classes at Averett University. If you have other questions about courses, assignments or exams, contact your professor. Contact information is provided in your course syllabus and in Moodle, our online learning management system.

Q: Will I have to log in at specific times each day?

A: No. Averett University’s online courses give you the flexibility to log in to your courses any time. Each online class syllabus will guide you through the requirements and deadlines. We recommend you log in every day to see announcements and assignments and participate in discussion forums.

Q: Will I have to use my computer’s camera during online courses?

A: In most cases, you will not need your face onscreen during the course, but we suggest you check your course syllabus to see if video conferences with your professor are part of the program. The first time you log in to your Averett Moodle account, you will be asked to upload a photo of yourself for your profile. You may also be required to upload a photo in the introduction to your online course.

Q: What technology do I need for online classes at Averett University?

A: You must have daily access to a computer and the Internet. The programs you will use are Moodle, our online learning management system; Averett email, which is on gmail; Blount Library, our online library; and PC Self Service, the system housing your official academic information. You can access all of these programs using a web browser like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. Your computer must have a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint and spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel. You will be required to complete assignments in these programs and upload the files to the Moodle assignment submission area.

Q: Will I be able to interact with my online classmates and professors?

A: Yes. Averett University’s online degree programs give you many opportunities to interact and communicate with classmates and professors, including discussion forums, chat rooms, chat forums and email. You can also direct message your classmates and professor any time. You will find contact information and other communication details in your course syllabus and in Moodle.

Q: How do I complete exams in online degree programs?

A: Your course syllabus, which is provided two weeks before the course starts, fully explains testing requirements. Most online classes use research papers and presentations as final assignments, however, some may include timed and/or untimed exams. Timed exams are explained in your course syllabus and in the exam itself in Moodle before you begin.

Q: How is my attendance tracked in online degree programs?

A: In most cases, you may log in to online classes when it is convenient for you. We recommend you log in every day to see course announcements and assignments and participate in discussion forums. Your professor records attendance at the end of each week, so if you do not log in, your attendance may not be counted for that week. Contact your Student Success Counselor if you have other questions.

Q: Do I have access to a library at Averett University?

A: Yes. Averett University students may access Blount Library, which provides thousands of journals, books and periodicals online. If you live near our main campus in Danville, Virginia, you are welcome to use the campus library. You will need your Student Identification Card, which you will receive after you start your degree program at Averett.

Q: Will I have access to tutoring services?

A: Yes. As a student at Averett University, you may access Smarthinking, which offers complimentary, expert, online tutoring and writing review services. After admission, you will receive a username and password for Smarthinking. If you have questions about Smarthinking services, contact your Student Success Counselor.
