The Averett University Online Master of Science in Criminal Justice degree is designed to provide an enhanced level of graduate study and education for Public Safety Practitioners who are entering or progressing into administration and leadership positions in public safety. This degree provides progressive professional graduate educational opportunities for those who already work in the field of public safety and are seeking advancement to administrative and leadership roles and responsibilities. Moreover, the Averett Online Masters of Science in Criminal Justice degree will produce professional public safety academics capable of taking leadership roles and responsibilities in community building and problem solving, and further developing the profession of public safety in the 21st century. 

Goals and Course Topics

The Master of Science in Criminal Justice is an interdisciplinary degree designed to provide an enhanced level of graduate study and education for criminal justice practitioners who are entering or progressing into administration and leadership positions. This program will produce professionals who are capable of taking leadership roles in community building and community problem solving and further developing the profession of criminal justice in the 21st century.

Students graduating with the Master of Science in Criminal Justice degree will:

  • demonstrate a thorough understanding of administrative and leadership issues impacting criminal justice agencies
  • acquire theoretical and applied knowledge of crime, crime analysis, criminal behavior and solutions to community crime
  • demonstrate skills for conducting and assessing research and program evaluation
  • develop improved competence in understanding and applying criminal justice administration and leadership principles
  • progress significantly in the workplace in regards to promotion and transferability within criminal justice vocational settings

MSCJ Administration and Leadership Format

This program is formatted for intense study and accelerated completion online. You’ll take classes no more than two at a time in eight-week blocks, which allows for degree completion in less than 23 months. Small classes allow for productive discussions and personal attention from your instructor.

Who Will Benefit from this MSCJ Program

The degree program is developed for both experienced and novice public safety  practitioners who are moving through the promotional hierarchy within their public safety agency.

We prefer working professionals whose official transcripts show a 3.0+ GPA in their last 60 credits of bachelor degree study. However, the Graduate Admissions Committee may provisionally admit students who earned less than a 3.0 as undergraduates after requesting additional documents and letters of recommendation from current or former professors and employers.
