What is your motivation for obtaining your degree?
My motivation for obtaining my master’s in education is a unique one. I teach mainly 10th graders a class that is called Intro to Health and Medical Sciences, a class for those who may be interested in a career in health care. I am actually a nurse by trade and spent 28 years in the field before switching over to teaching high school students. I obtained my teaching license and decided that I wanted to pursue a master’s in education as I see teaching as a new career path for me. Since I skipped a step and did not get a degree in education I thought I would best serve my students by going back to school to expand my knowledge base and craft as an educator.
Why did you choose Averett’s Graduate & Professional Studies Program?
I chose Averett University for a few important reasons. The online component appealed to me as I have a full time job, a family and many other interests. I felt this could best support my lifestyle. It is flexible and reasonable in cost, as well. I also picked Averett University because I am a veteran of the United States Army and they support veterans going back to school by providing financial assistance. Finally, the 18 month accelerated M.Ed. program appealed to me.

A tip to share with classmates would be “Keep on keeping on. We got this!”
Also, do not be afraid to email your instructors. Remember it is like being in a classroom and raising your hand. The professors are so engaging and responsive.
What helps to keep you motivated while you are in the program?
Always knowing I have support from the faculty at AU is what helps me keep motivated. The professors are engaging and positive, making the learning environment manageable and beneficial and even enjoyable. My family and my friends (my new AU friends too) have helped me keep it together when I have been a little taxed.
