Lizzie Altston headshotHello Everyone,

I am a retired principal from Western Middle School in the Alamance Burlington School System, Burlington, North Carolina. I retired after a total of thirty-nine (39) years in public education. I was principal at the middle school through many different times of success and sadness. I believe passionately in ‘life-long learning’.

I graduated from Virginia Polytechnic State University in Blacksburg, Virginia with a terminal degree in Educational Administration/School Finance. My post-doctorate work took place at Exeter College at Oxford University, Oxford, England. Over time I have attended many programs that lead to certificates in several areas of leadership.

I spent three summers in Naples, Fla as a part of Dr. Phil Schlechty’s renowned Center for School Reform. I have also served as adjunct professor at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University for twelve (12) years, and my last assignment was Field Supervisor for Administrative Interns.

I continue to serve in the community as the chairperson of the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union Advisory Board in Burlington, North Carolina. In addition, I also serve on the Loan Review Committee.

As of January 2016, I am a member of the Board of Directors for Ebenezer United Church of Christ. I have assisted with creating the YEA (Youth Empowerment Academy) Program, and currently serve as a member of the Educational Council which oversees 4.2 million dollars for one of the four federally funded Afterschool programs in North Carolina.

I serve yearly on the Women’s Day Committee. I also assist with raising additional funds for ‘It Can Be Done’ to build our own, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY. I continue to assist with many special projects identified by the pastor, Dr. Larry E. Covington.

I have four grown children, two grandsons and one granddaughter.
