Hello! My Name Is…

My name is Carmen Candelario! I live in Richmond Virginia, originally born and raised in Manhattan NYC. I am first Generation American born. My parents are from the Dominican Republic. I am 46 years old. I am married to a professional, modern dancer and I have two daughters, Genesis age 26, who owns her own renting business, and Amidah who is an 11 year old triple threat. She sings, dances, performs, and recites poetry. My parents still reside in NYC. I have a beautiful sister Louisa who is a mother of 3 perfect boys ages 19, 12, and 11 years old and a beautiful niece who now resides in NYC living her dream.

I have worked for a Health Insurance company for the past 5 years as a Bilingual Customer Service Representative. I love what I do, but I want to do more.

My hobbies include hanging out and visiting family and friends, singing, working out when I can, reading and being a fan for my daughters I love cooking healthy and foreign dishes.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Averett University?   

My daughters are my motivation. I have been trying to finish my bachelors since 2007. I have an Associate’s degree, but I am not satisfied. I still cannot get the career I want and with my Bachelor’s degree, I know I will get my career on track.

Why did you choose Averett University’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I chose Averett because all of my fellow students attend because they want to be here and they know they will get far in life. All the graduates from Averett that I know are living their dreams and desired careers.

How has your degree from Averett University assisted you in your career?

I am hoping to obtain a Bilingual position that requires a Bachelor’s Degree in the school system, court system, or anywhere needed and am hoping to increase my current salary with this degree.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Averett University’s GPS Program?

Take your time, believe in yourself, study and have a cheerleading team behind you. You may have to cut some toxic things out of your life for good grades, but it will be worth it.  

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

My graduation date of May 2019 keeps me motivated!

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

Averett University, Class of 2019!
