Hello! My Name Is…
Hi! My name is Lisa Backer and I am native to Virginia, raised in Virginia Beach. I currently reside with my husband of eighteen years and three sons in Chesapeake, Virginia. My sons are 16, 14, and 10 years old. My eldest son is co-captain of his varsity volleyball team in high school, and he enjoys playing club and beach volleyball in the off-season. My 13 year-old and 10 year-old are both avid baseball players and are members of travel teams. Because of this, most of my free time is spent at baseball and volleyball games, cheering on my children. I am also an animal lover and own two mixed-breed dogs my family adopted from a local shelter several years ago.
I am a graduate of Salem High School in Virginia Beach, and attended James Madison University for two years post-graduation. After leaving college, I worked in the banking business as a teller and assistant manager for four years before leaving to become a stay-at-home mom. Currently, I work as a bookkeeper at a local high school and am looking to enhance my career by seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Averett University.
What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Averett University?
My motivation for obtaining my degree is to inspire my children to work to achieve their educational goals. I feel seeing my hard work and achievements through obtaining my degree will prove to them the importance of education and how it positively affects their adult lives.

Why did you choose Averett University’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?
My husband and a close family friend are both graduates of Averett University, making Averett an easy option for me. My husband, Ace Backer, received his Master’s in Business in 2003, and his friend, Brian Duncan, received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in business from Averett. Brian also received the Malcolm Knowles award for having the highest GPA in 2009. After seeing the success achieved by both of these men through the Averett degree programs, I knew Averett would be a prime choice for me.
How has your degree from Averett University assisted you in your career?
As a bookkeeper, my education has heightened my understanding of accounting, financial procedures, and reasons for certain audit regulations.
What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Averett University’s GPS program?
Good time management is the most important piece of online studies. Juggling studies, a full-time job, and family responsibilities is no easy feat, but can be accomplished if one schedules time each day to study and complete weekly assignments.
What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?
My husband and children are my biggest cheerleaders. They never cease to encourage me when I struggle with an assignment or a class.
What is your anticipated date of graduation?
My goal is to graduate in May of 2019.
