Hello! My Name Is…

My name is Tracie Arrington. I am a first generation college graduate! I currently live in Bassett, VA with plans to move to Myrtle Beach, SC the summer of 2019. I am a 2014 Ferrum College graduate with a degree in elementary education. I am currently a middle school special education teacher at Laurel Park Middle School in Martinsville, VA. I have a Morkie named Annie and many, many cows. In my free time, I enjoy reading, being outdoors, going to the beach, and crafting with my Cricut.

What is your motivation for obtaining your degree here at Averett University?

Since I was little, I knew that I wanted to be in the education field. I taught elementary for 4 years and am currently teaching middle school. My ultimate goal is to teach at the college level. In order to meet that goal, I needed to complete a master’s program. I am currently finishing my master’s in special education through Averett.

Why did you choose Averett University’s Graduate & Professional Studies program?

I chose Averett’s Graduate and Professional Studies Program because of the convenience! While working a full time job, it would be nearly impossible for me to attend classes in person. Averett’s program made it possible for me to receive my master’s degree, in a short time frame, and conveniently.

How has your degree from Averett University assisted you in your career?

My master’s degree in special education from Averett has greatly impacted my career. I am able to teach students with special needs, a life-long passion for me! My courses have taught me many different strategies to use to help my special education students. I have learned a lot through these courses.

What advice would you share for current and incoming students in Averett University’s GPS Program?

My advice for incoming GPS students would be don’t be afraid to ask questions! It is so much better to ask a professor to clarify an assignment than to do it incorrectly and have to redo it.

The majority of my professors have been very supportive and have responded quickly to questions. If you have any other issues, be sure to contact your advisor. They are here to help!

What keeps you motivated while in your degree program?

My family has been a huge motivation with my degree! They have constantly encouraged me and told me how proud they were. I have always wanted to teach at the college level, and without a Masters or a Ph.D., that isn’t possible. This was just one more step towards my end goal.

What is your anticipated date of graduation?

I will graduate Dec. 8th 2018!!!
